About Workbench Test Lab
Mission Statement
We help makers choose or build the right workbench for their body, space, and tasks. Our ergonomics-and-workflow-first approach is backed by standardized testing of stiffness, flatness, racking resistance, and clamp-ability—plus clear, low-risk upgrade paths as your shop grows.
Our goal is practical confidence: transparent plans, dimension guidance, calculators for height and reach, and verified performance scores you can trust—all in one place, brand-neutral and safety-aware.
Our Brand Story
Workbench Test Lab began with a simple frustration shared across shops and classrooms: too many benches feel great on day one and disappoint by month three. Surfaces cup, racking creeps in, vises rack, and accessories don’t quite align. We set out to quantify what “rock solid” actually means and translate that into clear choices for DIY woodworkers, small-shop pros, mechanics, electronics makers, and educators.
We built fixtures and protocols to test real-world performance: deflection under planing loads, flatness over time, racking under diagonal force, and clamp-ability across common dog-hole grids. Alongside the lab work, we designed calculators and templates so you can match a bench to your height, reach arcs, and shop layout—whether you’re outfitting a one-car garage, a mobile cart, or a teaching lab.
We remain brand-neutral. If a bench is excellent, we’ll show you why. If it isn’t, we’ll show you how to fix it—or when to walk away. And if you want to start simple and upgrade over time, we map a standards-based path (20mm/96mm, 3/4 in, T‑track) that won’t paint you into a corner.
Our Team
- Lead Woodworker & Reviewer: A small-shop pro focused on workflow, workholding, and surface serviceability for glue-ups and assembly.
- Mechanical Test Engineer: Designs the jigs, measurement protocols, and instrumentation behind our stiffness, flatness, racking, and vibration tests.
- Ergonomics Advisor: Aligns our height, reach, and fatigue guidance with anthropometric data and safe body mechanics.
- Educator & Maker: Ensures our templates, BOMs, and classroom recommendations work in shared, budget-sensitive, and beginner-friendly spaces.
- Data Editor: Turns raw measurements into clear scores, visualizations, and performance-per-dollar insights.
Together, we publish results that are repeatable, safety-aware, and immediately useful—so your bench supports your best work today and scales with you tomorrow.
